My Mom’s First Trip to Africa: A Dream Come True

ree

Witnessing my mother's first visit to Africa was incredibly special. Visiting Africa had always been her dream, and I wanted to make this trip unforgettable. My mother's journey was incredibly special to witness from start to finish. She flew from Raleigh to Johannesburg, embarking on a journey filled with history, wildlife, family, and some of the continent's most stunning scenery.

We started her trip in Johannesburg, where she was able to experience the city beyond what she had imagined. From shopping to guided tours, we made sure she saw both the modern and historical sides of South Africa. The highlight of her time in Johannesburg was visiting the Apartheid Museum. It was a powerful and emotional experience, offering profound insight into South Africa’s past and the resilience of its people. That visit alone made a lasting impact on her and set the tone for the rest of the trip.

From Johannesburg, we drove to Madikwe Game Reserve to stay at one of our favorite places, Tao Game Lodge. As usual, the experience was beyond our expectations. My mom was able to see almost all of the Big Five, missing only the leopard. It was priceless to see how she reacted on safari. She was constantly calling family back home and video chatting friends while we were out on game drives, eager to share what she was seeing in real time. Seeing wildlife up close in such a peaceful setting made this part of the trip truly special for her.

After Madikwe, we traveled to Botswana, our home. This part of the trip was especially meaningful because my mom was able to spend quality time with her grandchildren. We showed her some of our favorite local spots and let her experience what our everyday life looks like. While the scenery and travel were incredible, being surrounded by family was the most important part of her time in Botswana

Before she returned home, we took her to Cape Town, which ended up being the highlight of her entire visit. From relaxing on the beaches to checking off classic tourist experiences, every day felt special. We explored Table Mountain, rode the Red Sightseeing Bus, drove along Chapman’s Peak, and enjoyed a Tram Wine Tour. Cape Town’s beauty, energy, and variety made a lasting impression on her. She had an unforgettable experience.

Looking back through the photos from this trip makes me smile. Seeing my mom experience Africa for the first time, connect with the culture, enjoy wildlife, spend time with her grandchildren, and fulfill a lifelong dream made the entire journey a success. We will always treasure this trip.
