Our time in Luxor was filled with experiences that we will never forget, from the time we spent sightseeing in towering temples to the time we spent in a morning hot air balloon flying over the West Bank. Karnak Temple—A Massive Open-Air Museum

The Karnak Temple is one of the greatest religious complexes in the world, and the enormity of its size is clearly apparent the moment you step inside. The towering columns, statues, and intricate carvings demonstrate how powerful and advanced ancient Egypt was at one point in time. The construction of this temple took thousands of years, and each section of the structure offers its own unique story of history. We spent some time wandering through the corridors, examining the hieroglyphics, and soaking in the magnificent architecture.

Temple of Hatshepsut—Beauty Against the Cliffs

Among Egypt's most aesthetically pleasing structures, this temple was constructed for Queen Hatshepsut. Characterized by columns, straight terraces, and a rock backdrop, this temple stands out among others. In addition to emanating an aura of serenity and magnificence, the temple recounts the story of one of Egypt's most prominent female leaders.

Valley of the Kings—Where the Pharaohs Rest

In the Valley of the Kings, we were able to take a close look at the graves of the kings and queens of ancient Egypt. It was a very dramatic experience to be able to walk down into the carved tunnels and view the vibrant colors, paintings, and symbols that were decorating the walls. Reading about Egypt's history is one thing, but standing where pharaohs were buried thousands of years ago is another.

Luxor Temple—A Nighttime Highlight

Although the Luxor Temple is stunning during the day, it takes on a mystical quality when night falls. The illumination of the temple draws attention to the statues, columns, and carvings, producing shadows and warm tones that provide the impression that everything is full of life. We were able to see things that we had missed previously as we walked through the space at night, which provided us with a different relationship to the place.

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Over Luxor

Our trip to Luxor came to a satisfying conclusion with the pleasure of riding in a hot air balloon. Following our departure, which occurred shortly before sunrise, we observed the light gradually spread throughout the West Bank. We were able to behold the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the verdant meadows by the Nile, and the desert that stretched off into the distance while we were in the elevated position. The trip was quiet, and it provided us with a glimpse of Luxor that seemed to belong to another era. One of the most memorable experiences that you can have in Egypt is this one.
