Lesotho: The Kingdom in the Sky

Lesotho, often called "The Kingdom in the Sky," is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries in Southern Africa. The moment we entered the highlands, it was clear that the traditions, landscapes, and people are unlike anywhere else. Time slows down in Lesotho, and the culture maintains a deep connection to its roots. The country keeps its history alive in everyday life, from the Basotho blankets to the strong horse-riding culture.

Our journey brought us close to the Basotho people, who welcomed us warmly and openly. They shared stories about their traditions, explained the meaning of their Basotho blankets, and discussed the important role horses play in their culture. Mountains, waterfalls, and the surprising sight of snow on the peaks surrounded us everywhere we went. T

Our base for the trip was Maliba Lodge, one of the most peaceful and scenic places we have stayed. The lodge sits inside the Ts’ehlanyane National Park, surrounded by mountains and quiet valleys. The views from the property are worth the visit alone—soft light over the peaks in the morning and crisp, clear skies at night. The rooms were warm, the food was among the best in Lesotho, and the hospitality was great. Maliba Lodge created the perfect place to slow down, rest, and take in the beauty of the highlands.

One of the highlights of our stay was visiting Maletsunyane Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls in Lesotho. The waterfall drops dramatically into a deep gorge, and the sound of the water carries across the valley. The view is powerful and calm at the same time. Standing near the edge and watching the water fall from such a height made us appreciate how untouched Lesotho’s landscapes truly are.

Driving up Sani Pass added a new level of excitement to our trip. The road is steep, rocky, and very narrow, which makes it one of the hardest drives in Southern Africa. Because of the tight turns and rough terrain, I wasn’t able to take photos along the way, but I did capture some drone footage that shows just how dramatic the curves and mountain edges truly are. As we climbed higher, the views opened into deep valleys and stretched across the border to South Africa. It’s a drive that demands patience and a reliable vehicle, but the reward at the top is unforgettable—a sweeping, panoramic view that stays with you long after the journey ends.

The Sani Pass

Lesotho is a place full of culture, history, and breathtaking views. It offers a calm and authentic experience that feels unique compared to other locations in Southern Africa. This trip reminded us how important it is to really connect with a place and its people. From our time with the Basotho people to the drives through the highlands and our peaceful stay at Maliba Lodge, we learned a lot. The landscape of Lesotho is breathtaking and feels untouched and quiet, wide, and full of beauty.
